South Carolina

The South Carolina Impact Community is led by the state’s service commission, the United Way Association of South Carolina, which allows for close partnership and collaboration with South Carolina’s 21 AmeriCorps programs, 3 AmeriCorps planning grantees, 8 Senior Corps Volunteer Generation grantees, and the network of 26 local United Ways.

As an Impact Community, South Carolina implements activities geared towards supporting all five Universal National Service Principles, but places particular focus on ensuring national service is an opportunity for all.  As such, over the course of the next two years, South Carolina aims to increase the number of individuals of color participating in national service in the state by 5% and retain 95% of individuals from low-income communities who receive in-service emergency financial assistance.

South Carolina Receives National Service Community Challenge Grant from Service Year Alliance

“The people of South Carolina and their communities have a relationship that can be described as mutualistic when national service is introduced into the culture. As we raise awareness and recruit young people to give back, we know that our communities will grow stronger and that an ethic of service will be fostered in those that serve,” said Carson Carroll, Executive Director of the SC Service Commission. “The funds provided through the Challenge Grant allow us to ensure that individuals across the state realize that serving as an AmeriCorps member is an opportunity available to everyone, despite economic, demographic, or financial barriers. This fund provides an opportunity to increase recruitment and provide additional support to members already serving in communities across South Carolina.”
